Reincarnation of American pianist as blind Korean girl?

Yoo Ye Eun is a little girl from South Korea who has become known for her ability, since the age of 3, to play classical piano compositions after hearing them for the first time. Not quite note perfect but impressively close, given the fact that Ye Eun was born blind and she’s never had a piano lesson! They call her the “new Mozart.”

Abandoned at birth, her talent was only discovered when her adopted mother was humming a melody and Ye Eun began to play along on a borrowed piano. The first tunes she played were Beethoven’s Fur Elise and Chopin’s Fantasie Impromptu.

When she later appeared on a Korean TV talent search show she became an overnight star and online sensation. She also won the prize.

When I saw videos of Miss Yoo performing, I was struck by her similarity to William Kapell, a classical pianist from the US who died in a plane crash in 1953, aged 31. The similarity is not so much the physical appearance as the tone they both emanate, kind of sad but intense and deep. Mind you, my wife says she can’t see any resemblance at all, so maybe it’s just me.

I have no idea if she is the reincarnation of Kapell — but maybe one to watch as she grows and develops.
